The Adventure Eyes Monster Ride is Coming Through!
On New Year’s Day 2011, Sian Belfield, Emily Morissey and Kate Ryley decided this was the year for a challenge. What started as a slightly hungover New Year’s pact has quickly evolved into a big event with increasing momentum. Now the three ladies are about to embark on the ride of their summer, from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Cycling over 900miles and up to 90miles a day, they will be pushing themselves to the limit for Mountain Rescue England and Wales.
All three cyclists are involved with Adventure Eyes, a recently launched provider of online outdoor adventure publications who also help to raise funds and awareness for related charities and events. Using the cycling challenge to raise funds for Mountain Rescue seemed to make perfect sense, as Kate Ryley, from Adventure Eyes said, “we have chosen Mountain Rescue England and Wales, because as outdoor people ourselves we know that these are the unsung heroes we all hope will be there if our adventures go wrong!”.
Louise Ansell, Co-developer of Adventure Eyes and Support Driver for the Monster Ride added, “the Mountain Rescue teams are there for the walkers, the climbers, the bikers, the runners, the gliders, the riders, the paddlers and even the fishermen! The experts, the novices, the groups, the soloists - they’re on stand by for all...24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, and they do it voluntarily. Working with Dartmoor Cycles, the Monster Ride seemed the perfect opportunity to do what we could to help to raise funds and awareness for this vital rescue service.”
So far the training has been going well and although nerves are running high, the girls are now keen to get underway. They depart Land’s End on Monday 8th August and will peddling their way up the country from there. Mountain Rescue England and Wales
The mountain and cave rescue service in the UK is the responsibility of the police, under their obligation to 'protect life and property'. Teams – and the Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) – are called out through the 999 system, and work with the police, ambulance or fire service according to the nature of the incident. They frequently work with the RAF Search & Rescue (RAF SAR) and increasingly with the various air ambulances.
